Wherever contacting components are moving in opposite directions, friction is produced resulting in abrasion and heat development. To reduce the friction resistance and thus protect the components from abrasion generally lubricants are applied. Hence, a good lubrication is required for the functionality of transmission chains. Since the chain links are interconnected via loose joints, friction is produced inside them during operation. In addition to that, considerable abrasion emerges between sprocket wheels and chain. As heavily used components, chains require a regular lubrication in order to reduce abrasion, to keep the temperature of the chain low and to minimize noise development. In addition, the mechanical efficiency decreases significantly with unlubricated chains. Generally, liquid lubricants as oils or greases are used, in part also suspensions with lubricants as molybdenum disulphide. These lubricants must be regularly applied on the chain, which often results in the soiling of the vehicle as well as of clothes. Furthermore, the lubrication must be renewed after rides in the rain.

These problems can be avoided by the application of carbon-based solid lubricants. Here, the solid lubricant is mounted with contact to the chain drive, and thus a permanent and low-maintenance lubrication without any pollution is achieved. The solid lubricant is constantly and self-controlled transferred to the chain during the ride.
